“il alla à lai de l’ail” is not supposed to mean anything. Its translation is illogical and came from looking for a lyrical (obscure) way to say “la, la-la la, la-la la, la la” - which seemed arrested, and too specific for this show, yet gave me the feeling I wanted of whistling whilst I walked. I also aimed to take an obtuse slant to the work selected, so that I could ignore the idea that things somehow fit together, when they don’t. But how they do come together for me, is in their shared totemic ability to radiate fetishistic, ritualistic and cultish qualities, which was my initial drive for this show.

So “il alla à lai de l’ail”, acts as a sort of mantra for conjuring up the kick I got out of choosing pieces from artists whose work I like.
